Dr. Nicola is an author of four books on Lyme disease and the medical director of RestorMedicine, an integrative medical center based in San Diego. She is a Lyme-literate Naturopathic Physician, combining conventional and integrative approaches to treating Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses.

I’m a wife, mom of one, naturopathic physician, author, educator, clinic director, and Lyme expert.

I grew up in Australia and moved to the States in 1999 and got my doctorate of naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University.

In 2003, I moved to San Diego and got started working with children with autism.

Some of the young moms were complaining, “Oh my gosh, everything hurts. I’m exhausted. I have headaches everyday.”

So I did functional medicine workups on them and found that quite a few of them were coming back positive for Lyme.

My mentor at the time, Doctor Kurt Weller, said to me,” Nicola, if you want a busy practice, treat Lyme.”

I was about a year out of school and I wanted a busy practice. And I said, “Right, I’m in, I’ll do it. “

And so my learning began.

Almost 20 years later, I hear some practitioners ask, “Is there a need for more Lyme docs? Is it too late to specialize? Is the market saturated?”

And today I would be the first one to say, “Absolutely not.”

It’s not too late. In fact, today there is a greater need for Lyme experts than any time I’ve known. There are still many places where there are too few Lyme practitioners. Lyme disease is growing and the numbers are out of control.
